In a diverse country like the United States many different religions are represented abundantly. We may often bump into new or people we once knew that associate themselves with a religion that does not seem to fit them or their life styles. The question I am answering in this blog post is, how involved must an individual be to call themselves a member of a religion. An example would can you can yourself a good Muslim if you drink wine. I will examine my own religious views using this question and the seven dimensions.
How Involved Do You Have To Be To Call Yourself A Member Of A Religion?
1. Practical and ritual
I am christian, and i guess classified under assembly of god. As far as rituals go in the faith I don't follow them as much as I should. I used to attend a private christian school and every Wednesday we had chapel or church service. After I left the school in 8th grade I became a sort of Easter, Christmas type of church go-er. For other ritualistic practices I say a very brief prayer before I eat, and cant say that I never forget to say it. I guess this would be a strike against being a good christian.
2. Experiential and Emotional
I cant say that I have ever had any epiphanies or have felt the holy spirit in church. In church I usually have an agreeing or understanding feeling. I don't think that this would go either way, because it is neither a good or bad thing.
3.Narrative or Mythic
I have often wondered or thought about if I really believe that certain events in the bible happened. I think that some are based on real events but maybe puffed up a bit to show the meaning behind the story. So in general I do believe most of the events told in the bible are true. I guess this would be a strike against, because we should have a strong faith in everything the bible tells us.
4.Doctrinal and Philosophical
I do believe in the bible and the stories, sayings, and lessons in it. I think and try to live buy the guide lines and lessons set down in the bible. This would be a strike towards being a good christian
5. Ethical and Legal
I think think that the bible supports and Christianity promotes good morals. I think that if the moral and ethical codes given in the Bible are followed most people would not become tied up in any kind of legal battles, or trouble in general. I try to follow what the bible says to the fullest and so I think that would be a good strike towards being a christian.
6. Social and Industrial
From a social point of view I don't really display my religious views when in public. Being a christian one of the things you are supposed to do is spread the word of the bible and the faith. Since i have not actively or aggressively been pursuing this I would have to count this as a strike against myself.
7. Material
The bible to my knowledge or recollection does not require you to have anything to be a good christian. The only think I can think of that you should not have are things like drugs or false idols. I have neither of the two, and own several bibles so I would have to give myself a good strike on this one.
Looking back at the seven dimensions and what I have rated my self I would be considered an on the border christian because I had three good and three bad strikes. But doing a test this was does not really represent how good of a christian, Muslim, or Buddhist one is. I think that it is based on the amount of faith that one has, and only the individual can answer that.
